Fifty Years of Dense-Medium Mastery

1974

John Finlay Group founded in Brisbane, Australia — a benchmark in coal beneficiation EPC, dry pre-sorting and dense-medium separation.

1989

Entry into China; Beijing HQ and a nationwide network — with the Group design institute holding Class-A qualification.

100+

Since 2004, Finlay Beijing has operated 100+ coal preparation plants across eight provinces (~343 Mt/a designed capacity); Shanxi John Finlay Design Engineering has designed 110+ plants totalling 500+ Mt of washing capacity.

2026

Hefei John Finlay Mining founded. Drawing on the Group's complete industrial chain, the non-ferrous mining segment has been integrated — bringing the non-ferrous laboratory, non-coal projects and plant trusteeship operations under one unified management system for resource sharing, coordinated development and standardized operation, lifting the Group's overall efficiency and industrial synergy. A 21-strong technical team led by a national-level mineral processing master; non-ferrous patents under application.

02
Why pre-concentration

Grades are falling. Energy is climbing. Tailings dams are filling. Yet conventional plants still grind every tonne of waste rock to powder.

Our answer: reject the waste before the mill with photoelectric sorting and dense medium cyclones, so grinding and flotation treat only ore that deserves it. Low-grade deposits become economic; tailings and waste rock become products.

The Journey of a Rock

STATION 1 · 60–10 mm · DRY

XRT Intelligent Dry Sorting

X-ray transmission imaging with AI: X-rays image the inside of each rock, AI maps the mineral distribution, and solenoid-controlled air jets blast ore and waste into separate streams. No water, no reagents.

Broad ore adaptability: pre-concentration and upgrading of metallic ores, non-metallic ores and coal — less mill feed, higher feed grade, lower energy and cost.

  • Fully dry — no water, no reagents
  • Particle-by-particle; waste out at the coarsest size
  • Modular: pithead, underground, ahead of the plant

Dense Medium Cyclone Separation

Precise density separation in a centrifugal field: ferrosilicon & magnetite medium in closed circuit, just 0.1 m³ of fully recycled water per tonne.

  • Pressurized 2-product: concentrate + rejects in one pass
  • 0.5–50 mm feed · closed-circuit medium recovery

Other Processes for the Fines

Fines report to flotation and other downstream processes — but by now feed grade has multiplied 2–5× and tonnage is down sharply, so reagents and energy fall with it.

  • Full-size-fraction: one flowsheet from 60 mm down
  • Tailings & waste valorized in parallel (below)

Test

It starts with a sample

Send ~1 tonne of representative ore. We run site surveys, laboratory separation tests and industrial pilot runs — our mobile pilot vehicle drives to your mine site and tests under true production conditions.

  • Fixed DMC test platform (built 2024)
  • Modular mobile pilot platform (self-developed, 2025)
  • Washability results + feasibility report

Overall Solution

Engineered for your ore

From the test data we engineer your full-size-fraction flowsheet: process optimization, equipment selection, plant layout. The blend of sorting, DMC and flotation is dictated by the ore itself.

Your Largest Dormant Asset Is the Tailings Dam

Reviving discarded low-grade resources in mine waste dumps: we recover the valuable components locked in waste rock, and process waste rock and coarse tailings into aggregate, manufactured sand and other construction materials — building an efficient, comprehensive resource-utilization system of "secondary recovery of valuable resources and circular value from solid waste", relieving waste-dump storage pressure and safety & environmental risks.
